I keep hearing people on the teevee rant about “forced diversity” and “PC fascism” and it makes me wonder how these alternate-universe broadcasts are reaching me here in this world where John Constantine has to be straight and pharaohs are being played by squinty Australian white guys.

an openly queer actor has never won an oscar

only once has an openly queer actor been nominated for an oscar

however, 22 straight actors have received oscar nominations for playing queer characters

This post is problematic, don’t bisexual people count?

Here’s a short list in no particular order of actors who openly admitted multi-sexual attraction, regardless of the terms they used to describe their sexuality

Marlene Dietrich - Nominated 1931

Marlon Brando - Won 1955/1973 (8 nominations)

Anna Paquin - Won 1994

Angelina Jolie - Won 2000/2014 (3 nominations)

Jodie Foster - Won 1989/1992 (4 nominations)

Ian Makellan - Nominated as a gay man in a gay role 1999, also 2002 (I’m assuming this is the one you were referencing)

Please don’t erase bisexual people when you talk about “queer actors”

The more I see this post, the deeper it cuts. So I took a few moments to google “Openly Bisexual Academy Award Winners” and there are LOTS, these are just a few of the biggest names among the actor category. When talking about queer issues, I often see ‘queer’ defined by the LG, Please don’t forget about the B, And don’t erase the T entirely

Why Tumblr people are ‘crazy’:

snow-anne:

While this post is a tad long, I hope you will lend me your ear,
because I think it is important that people understand why ‘Social Justice Warriors’, minorities and other Tumblrites can come across as overly angry or sensitive to some. I will give an example of what happens when minorities speak out against those who have power over them, in a non-anonymous, face-to-face setting. While this example is about trans people, it can easily be applied to most other minorities.

Today my brother came over for dinner. He brought up a trans woman who was not ‘passable’ and referred to her as “that man" and "he”. I’m a trans woman myself and couldn’t let him misgender a sister, so I politely corrected him. Instead of apologizing, he justified his mistake with “she looked like a man and didn’t put in enough effort”. I easily picked his words apart, having had these arguments countless times, and then asked whether he would call me a man if I were less conventionally female-looking? He answered negatively, but said the lady in question didn’t make any effort to make her voice sound more feminine. Wanting him to realize how difficult voice retraining is, I asked my brother to give me his best female voice right then and there…

He looked legitimately terrified, kind of the reaction you get when you ask a guy to hold your purse for a second. Then, the anger came. He unleashed a screaming tirade of excuses, red herrings and accusations. Trying to keep this from escalating, I carefully walked towards him with my hands in a calming gesture, hoping to calm him down. He placed his fist against my nose, yelling “one step closer, I dare you”, I froze and braced myself, having been there before. But, I got lucky, he stormed off with an angry “fine, I hate transgenders you’re all men!”.

This is why trans women are ok with you saying ‘tranny’ around them. This is why trans people don’t mind you calling them by their old name and pronouns. This is why the trans people you know personally, aren’t like those ‘crazy’ ones on Tumblr.

When we stand up for ourselves, confront people with the power and privilege they hold over us, bring to light their normally hidden prejudices, things can get ugly real fast. Again, this is not just restricted to trans people, the situation I had today can happen on any oppression axis.

For some, the internet is the only place we can speak freely without having to fear violence. Next time you think people here overreact, think about the hundreds of times they had to stay silent, clench their teeth and hold back their tears of frustration.

YA Books About Transgender Characters

There haven’t been a lot of young adult books published about transgender characters. This list is not meant to be a “best of” list — it is simply a list of the titles that we are aware of, and we are sure there are more we aren’t aware of. This list is limited to titles published specifically for a young adult audience, which means titles published for adults that teens might still enjoy aren’t included.

Do you have a favorite YA book about a transgender character? Please tell us why you loved it!

I want to give special shout-outs to Luna and Parrotfish, two of my favorite YA novels.

I’d also add that Every Day by David Levithan is, in a way, a really good book about a non-binary character. Part of what makes A and Rhiannon’s love story so unique and compelling is that it exists outside of binary constructions of gender and sex identity.

At this rate, Colbert might actually be held accountable in the near future for making transphobic jokes.

Go trigger warn some shit

That’s not transphobic, though. He’s making a point that because the LGBT agenda is “barreling forward at full-speed” that the B and T of LGBT is being left behind. Everyone is focusing on the L and the G that there are people who have no idea what the B and T even stand for. He’s not being transphobic or making a slight meant to make fun of or harm the bi and trans* community. He’s making a point that no one is focusing on them because they’re focusing on the lesbian and gay community.

Mother. Fucking. This.

People really need to realize that EVERYTHING Colbert says while on camera is satire.

Satire: The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the cotext of a play, novel, fiilm or other works.

He is not making a transphobic joke. He is not honestly saying that bi and trans people do not count/matter/exist. He is making humor in order to shed light on the fact that they are forgotten.

He is doing this to raise fucking awareness that there is more to LGBT than LG. He is raising a big flag that says “Hey, don’t forget about these guys. They count. They matter. Why aren’t you doing anything about them? Why aren’t they discussed?” He is not trying to say “They don’t matter.”

So please stop with the self righteous, self pity, “social justice” comments unless you know what you are talking about.

I do appreciate that Bisexual is matched with bacon. I rather enjoy bacon.

This is why I love the Colbert Show.

Stephen Colbert is basically my hero.
